Public controversies about how institutions should treat individuals who identify as a gender that does not correspond to their biological sex have recently been debated in the halls of government, in courtrooms, and on TV talk shows. Should males who identify as women have access to women’s restrooms? Which school locker room should girls who identify as boys be permitted, or required, to use? Should teachers be compelled to use a student’s preferred pronoun, or even a gender-neutral pronoun such as “ze” instead of “he” or “she”?

Craving for Love was first published in 1993 to help people understand homosexuality and other dependent relationships. It was in trying to understand homosexuality that I gained the self-understanding that made me realise the homosexual and I – though I was not lesbian – were next-of-kin. The book was published in the UK and distributed internationally. It has slowly become recognised as something of a classic among those who want out of homosexuality, those who help them and those who want to know what homosexuality is.

In what could be called a stunning reversal, Dr. Lisa Diamond, a top researcher of the American Psychological Association (APA) and avowed lesbian activist, states that viewing sexuality as exclusively two types — heterosexual and homosexual — that are rigid and unchangeable no longer applies. California psychologist Laura A. Haynes writes in the essay below that “the battle to disprove ‘born that way and can’t change’ is now over, and [Diamond] is telling LGBT activists to stop promoting the myth.”

Scripture makes a distinction between intense biological ‘orientations’ people experience and the identity that is available to them ‘in Christ’. Indeed, Christians have in the cross the ultimate paradigm of self-denial. A person's experience of a ‘homosexual orientation’ is no exception to the distinction made between biologically-based besetting conditions and self-identity revealed and constructed by God in Christ. Scripture affirms male and female as complementary sexual counterparts. Exclusive same-sex attractions cannot be given greater weight than the commands of God and should not be integrated into a homosexual identity.
